Freshly stained timber deck and pergola on a Canberra home

Timber is the one surface that shows every shortcut

Paint hides a multitude of sins. Stain and clear finishes hide none of them. Sanding marks, uneven absorption, lap lines and missed grain all stay visible, which is why timber finishing is quoted and executed differently to painting a wall.

Canberra conditions make it harder again. Decks and pergolas take direct UV and heavy frost, and unprotected timber greys, splits and cups within a couple of seasons. Getting the right product on at the right film build, and knowing when a surface needs recoating rather than a full strip, is most of the job.

Painted timber trim and doors sit under interior painting and exterior painting instead.

What we finish in timber

New timber, weathered timber, and finishes that have simply run out of life.

Decks and verandahs

Cleaned, sanded, and oiled or stained with a product suited to foot traffic and full sun exposure.

Pergolas and outdoor structures

Posts, beams, battens and screens, coated on all faces rather than only the ones you can see from the house.

Front doors and entry timber

The feature everyone touches. Prepared carefully and finished in multiple thin coats for depth rather than one heavy one.

Windows and timber frames

Sashes, sills and reveals, sealed against water while still operating properly once finished.

Interior joinery and stairs

Handrails, treads, shelving and built ins, finished to a sheen that suits the room and the wear it will take.

Fences, gates and screens

Large areas of timber treated efficiently without losing the finish quality on the sections at eye level.

Stain, oil or clear coat

The right choice depends on the timber, the exposure and how much maintenance you want to sign up for.

Penetrating oils

Soak into the timber and weather gradually rather than peeling. Easy to refresh, but need doing more often.

Film forming stains

Longer lasting colour and better UV protection, but they must be stripped rather than recoated once they start to fail.

Clear and water based coatings

Best for interior joinery and protected exterior timber where you want the grain to stay visible and pale.

Honest maintenance advice

We tell you the recoat interval before you commit, so the finish you choose matches how often you want us back.
